ABISMO is a sculpture depicting a man sitting on the edge of a cliff, gazing into the void, with his hands separated from his body in a gesture of grasping for what has been left behind. For an artist, hands are a symbol of creation, identity, and life itself; losing them is a profound mutilation, an absence that can only be compensated by what one dreams and dares to imagine.
Originally, the mold for this figure was intended to be part of a series titled Lo que dejas atrás (What You Leave Behind), but a fortuitous accident changed its course. Francesca arrived at the foundry before the piece was finished and found it in this state: without the hands attached, the body unfinished, and with unexpected colors that seemed to tell their own story. The raw emotional power of that image led her to abandon her initial vision and leave the sculpture unfinished, giving birth to ABISMO.
The piece reflects a pivotal moment in the artist’s life: her decision to leave Italy and move to Mexico in 2006. That “leap into the void” involved deep personal and professional losses, but it was also essential for her artistic and human growth.
The figure embodies both courage and vulnerability in crucial decisions, while the hands represent the parts of oneself sacrificed in the name of dreams. It is profoundly symbolic that ABISMO stands as a tribute to risk, inner strength, and the transformative power of sacrifice.
