CATRINA is a resin sculpture of a woman bust with the Mexican traditional costume and make up of Día de Muertos.
Francesca Dalla Benetta has been living in Mexico since 2006, and her art is partially influenced by the local culture.
This piece was inspired by one of the most traditional events of the year, the day of deaths, when everybody makes tributes to their ancestors, gifting them with their favorite food and things.
A Catrina is a dame of death: according to urban legend, La Catrina’s roots come from Aztec death goddess Mictecacihuatl. In the legend, the goddess served the same purpose as La Catrina does today: to honor and protect those who have passed away and symbolize the relationship Mexicans have with death.
This piece is hand painted with oil colors.
This is a unique piece and there is no other like it.
The artist created also different versions of catrina: Purple Catrina, a full body piece, and Red Catrina Bust.
